Description: Due to the assimilation and transition of the AOL program into the West Allis-West Milwaukee School District, very little project based learning has been implemented this year. Instead AOL has spent the majority of the year assisting credit deficent students in earning credits in their needed core content areas. Students are earning credits through a software system, Compass Learning.
Analysis: To be completing frank, I am not fond of Compass Learning. I find in rigid, dull, and requries no thinking from the student; only the ability to recall information. However some students do like the program, and find it easy to work with. As a way to gauge student learning and thoughts about the program, I asked several students to create a refection of a course they have completed: what they learned, as well as what they like about the course and did not like about the course.
Reflection: I found several of the student reflections to be quite insightful. It is interesting to read what a student thought about the course after completing it.
I have also included a reflection the same student did for a financial literacy class. The course is available on the internet free of charge. Most students find Moneyskill to be a bit boring, but most students report they learn a lot. In fact I have had several students open up bank accounts because of what they learned in this course. I also believe every student should complete this class before graduating from high school.
